Design of the SPring-8 JAEA beamline BL22XU

We designed the hard X-ray undulator beamline BL22XU, which is dedicated to Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) at SPring-8 (now Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA)). BL22XU is used for XAFS (X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) analysis experiments to develop separation and extraction materials for radioactive waste treatment and to elucidate their chemical behavior, magnetic research experiments using a diffractometer, and experiments under extreme conditions using a high-pressure press and a diamond anvil cell. The available X-ray energy range was set from 3 to 70 keV. To design the optics of the beamline, the reflectivity of the mirrors, the diffraction width of the monochromatic crystal, and the absorptance of the Be window were calculated. In addition, ray tracing was performed to optimize the materials for optics, dimensions, and location. The delay time of the ADL (Acoustic Delay Line) was also examined to ensure the safety in the use of radioactive materials. The operation of BL22XU "JAEA Actinide Science I" has already started. By collaborating BL22XU and BL23SU "JAEA Actinide Science II," which uses a soft X-ray undulator as a light source, we solve the problems to promote nuclear sciences. Since the monochromator was upgraded in 2018-2019, initial planning and measured data are documented here again.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency accelerator-driven subcritical system (JAEA-ADS) pursues the reduction of nuclear waste by transmuting minor actinides. JAEA-ADS project drives a 30-MW proton beam to a lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) spallation target to produce neutrons for a subcritical core reactor. To this end, the JAEA-ADS beam transport (BT) must provide a suitable beam profile and stable beam power to the beam window of the spallation target to avoid high-thermal stress in the components, such as the beam window. The beam transport was optimized by tracking a large number of macroparticles to mitigate the beam loss, performance with high stability in the presence of errors, and fulfill the length requirement on the transport. This work presents beam transport design and beam dynamics research for the JAEA-ADS project.

Accordingly, the Nuclear Transmutation Division of J-PARC has studied these issues with using J-PARC's accelerator facilities, and so on. This paper introduces these topics.

According to the project plan of JT-60 Super Advanced that is implemented as an international project between Japan and Europe, the neutral beam (NB) injectors have been disassembled. The disassembly of the NB injectors started in November, 2009 and finished in January, 2012 without any serious problems as scheduled. This reports the disassembly activities of the NB injectors.

Design of "NeutrOn Beam-line for Observation & Research Use (NOBORU)" for JSNS of J-PARC

Total 23 neutron beam-lines will be installed for JSNS in the J-PARC project. One of them is assigned for the Materials and Life Science Facility (MLF), and the MLF will construct a neutron beam-line to demonstrate and monitor neutronic performance of JSNS. The neutron beam-line was accordingly named as "Neutron Beam-line for Obserbation and Research Use (NOBORU)". Major parts of the NOBORU, i.e., beam ducts, shield, a beam stop, slits, a cabin for measurement, a pillar crane, a sample table, etc., have been ordered in March 2004, and installation will be completed in 2007. A T0 chopper, a frame-overlap chopper, detector systems, samples, etc. will be ordered later on. The sample position is at 14 m from the decoupled moderator. Approximate sample room dimensions are 3 $$times$$ 2.5 m in area and 3 m in height. A shield structure was determined by shielding calculations in which detailed 3-D structure was considered. The design of NOBORU will be presented in the session.

A Preliminaly investigation on the satellite building of MLF; Beamline shielding analysis

In order to estimate the total cost of the building, we started the shielding analysis of the beamline using MCNPX and PHITS, where the latest beamline design and the neutron spectrum have been adopted.

Materials and Life Science Facility of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) is an experimental facility where neutron and muon beams are provided as powerful probes. They are generated with high-intensity proton beam supplied through a 3-GeV proton beam transport (3NBT) line. Its beam optics and components were designed to transport the proton beam of large emittance with extremely low loss rate. The 3NBT accommodates an intermediate target that causes large beam loss. The scheme of the cascade target system was carefully devised to overcome difficulties due to high radiation.

Oxidation reaction kinetics on Ti(0001) surface studied by real-time photoelectron spectroscopy

Oxidation reactions of Ti(0001) surfaces were monitored by real-time photoelectron spectroscopy with high brilliant synchrotron radiation and He-I resonance line. An oxygen adsorption model and ultra-thin oxide layers formation processes were reviewed on the basis of time evolutions of the adsorbed oxygen amount, oxidation states, electronic states and the work function, which were obtained from photoelectron spectra for Ti 2p and O 1s core levels as well as the valence band.

Study of beam fluctuation of high speed variably-polarizing undulator APPLE-2 in 2001 Dec.-2002 Nov.

We measured the orbit fluctuation caused by APPLE-2 type undulator (ID23) installed in the SPring-8 storage ring by using the developed real time measurement system of electron and photon beam position monitors. We quantitatively found two characteristic fluctuations correlating with the ID23 motion by wavelet transform which is a kind of frequency analysis. One originates from the variation of error field during the ID drive. The other originates from the stray magnetic field leaked from the servomotors for the phase drive. Using these results, we tried to get rid of the effect of error fields on the beam orbit by the precise feed-forward correction table and the stray field shield. Consequently we succeeded in suppressing the orbit fluctuation down to sub-micron during the gap drive, which is observed by photon beam position monitors installed in downstream 20m from each light source point.

Development of EPICS system for 3NBT proton beam monitor system

In the J-PARC 3GeV proton beam transport facility (3NBT), proton beam profile monitor, halo monitor, loss monitor and proton current monitors are used as proton beam monitor. The electric signals from these monitors are converted to digital signal with ADC on CAMAC modules and monitoring with EPICS system through CAMAC controller CC/NET. At the 3NBT proton beam monitor system, these are monitored with frequency of 25Hz and all of these data are archived. In this report, we develop the EPICS system for 3NBT proton beam monitors and confirm the performance of the system. As a result, we can monitor and archive these proton beam monitor signals at 25 Hz with CC/NET and EPICS.

Electron-beam-induced fries rearrangement and oxidation reactions of sulfonic acid esters in crystalline state

The electron beam (EB)-induced reactions of arylsulfonic acid esters, phenyl p-toluenesulfonate (1a), phenyl benzenesulfonate (1b), and phenyl 1-naphthalenesulfonate (1c), were examined in the balk state. The EB irradiation of 1a afforded the Fries rearrangement products, o- and p-hydroxyphenyl p-tolylsulfones (2a and 3a), phenol (5), and the oxidation product of 2a, o,p-dihydroxyphenyl p-tolylsulfone (4a), which has not been observed in photolysis. The irradiation of 1b, which is liquid at room temperature, gave Fries products, 5, and the oxidation product, o,p-dihydroxyphenyl phenylsulfone. On the other hand, the EB-induced reaction of 1c proceeded with the lowest reactivity through crystal to crystal transformation to afford Fries products and 5, but not oxidation product. The mechanistic study reveals that oxidation product 4a generated by the oxidation reaction of ortho-Fries product 2a but not para-isomer 3a with an active oxidant, which should result from the decomposition of 1a.

The Electron beams (EB)-induced reactions of triphenylsulfonium methanesulfonate (1) in the crystalline state gave benzene-substituted product, biphenylsulfonium methanesulfonate (2), which has not been observed by either photolysis. In this paper, the EB-induced reactions of triphenylsulfonium salt derivatives, which possesses aromatic/aliphatic counter anions, have been examined. The anionic moiety of sulfonium salts has practically little effect on the formation of biphenyl salt 2 as well as the other products. The consumption rates of the sulfonium salts containing aromatic counter anions are somewhat smaller in a crystalline state and about two times larger than those of the salts with aliphatic counter anions. The greater decomposition rates of the sulfonium salts with aromatic counter anions than those of aliphatic counter anions in an amorphous state are elucidated by lower ionization potential of the salts with aromatic counter anions such as tosyl and naphthyl groups than those with aliphatic counter anions.

Characterization of cryogenically cooled silicon crystals, for the double-crystal monochromator on BL11XU at SPring-8

Liquid-N$$_{2}$$-cooled Si crystals replaced water-cooled diamond crystals for the double-crystal monochromator on BL11XU at SPring-8. To use the whole energy from 6 keV to 70 keV, we developed the system of dual symmetric Si geometry, Si(111)/Si(311), which can be switched by a horizontal translation (X) stage perpendicular to the beam axis. The off-line experiment was performed to estimate the degree of the crystal strain, which may arise from the way of assembling in the crystal holder. With MoK$$alpha$$$$_{1}$$, rocking curves from the crystals were measured for the second crystal of the double-crystal diffractometer of parallel setting. Each of the observed full-width at half maximum (FWHM) was almost constant and identical to the calculated value wherever X-rays hit on the crystal surface. By the use of synchrotron radiation from the undulator the crystals were tested and then the characterization was performed. The observed intensities and rocking curves resulted in that each crystal was good for BL11XU and that the performance of X-ray reflection was improved.

One of the experimental facilities in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) is the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF), where high-intensity neutron beams and muon beams are used as powerful probes for materials science, life science and related engineering. The neutrons and muons are generated with high-intensity proton beam from 3-GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS). The high-intensity proton beam has to be effectively transported, and a neutron production target and a muon production target have to be also properly irradiated. The principal design of the 3-GeV proton beam transport facility (3NBT) is systematized.

A New method for neutron-beam-line shielding calculation

A method for neutron-beam-line shielding calculation with a Monte Carlo code was newly developed. In the first step, components inside the biological shield such as a target-moderator-reflector-assembly and a neutron-beam-line were modeled, and a neutron current distribution along a duct of the neutron-beam-line was calculated. In the second step, decreases of neutron current along the beam-line were regarded as source terms for the beam-line shield, and required beam-line shield thickness was calculated. The most remarkable feature of this method was accurate treatment of the neutron source term distribution along the beam-line in the second step calculation. The followings were evaluated for JSNS by applying this method: (1) neutron-beam-line shield thickness with an empirical formula for estimating shield thickness conveniently, (2) beam stop sizes, (3) dose rates at a sample position when a shutter was closed, and (4) activation level of a To-chopper blade. These results gave conditions for determining the layout of 23 neutron-beam-lines in the experimental hall.

The main components of a new beamline for surface and interface crystal structure determination at SPring-8 are briefly described. Stages for the beamline monochromator are modified for making an incident X-ray intensity more stable for surface X-ray experiments. Absolute photon flux densities were measured with an incident photon energy. A new ultrahigh vacuum system is introduced with preliminary X-ray measurements from an ordered oxygen on Pt(111) surface.

A Preliminary design of the beam transport line for the K900 superconducting AVF cyclotron

A new project aiming a breakthrough in biotechnology and materials science has been proposed at TIARA (Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application) facilities of JAERI. We have started designing a K900 superconducting AVF cyclotron (K900 SCC). The beam transport line for JAERI K900 SCC has been designed preliminary for heavy ion beams with an energy of more than a hundred MeV/n. An achromatic beam transport system has been designed for high transmission efficiency of ion beams and good adjustability of magnet parameters using the computer code “TRANSPORT".
